Designs For Two Frederick Parks Move Forward

MHG is pleased to announce that with team members, AMF Architects, Posey MEP Engineers and ECS Geotechnical, Frederick is one step closer on plans to redesign two of its parks. The design projects will provide for extensive renovations to Mullinix Park, near Carroll Creek in downtown Frederick, and Hill Street Park, in the city’s Hillcrest neighborhood.

The design plans and construction drawings will allow the city’s staff to proceed with the procurement process for park improvements that will include landscape architecture, architecture, surveying and engineering for trail improvements, improvements to amenities, lighting upgrades and overall beautification for the two facilities.

Both parks fall within equity emphasis areas—a planning tool that identifies census tracts with large numbers of low-income or traditionally disadvantaged populations or groups—where improvements to park facilities have been a priority of the aldermen and the city in recent budget cycles.

The plan for improvements to Mullinix Park includes renovations and improvements to restrooms, paths and seating, landscaping, and playgrounds, as well as adding new amenities. During a time of segregation, the park on North Bentz Street was historically used by the city’s Black community. It contains one of the city’s two public swimming pools which is not within the current scope of the renovations. It also has a large pavilion, a basketball court, and a playground that the MHG team is currently securing community input on.

The plan for improvements to Hill Street Park includes renovating and restoring multi-purpose fields, restroom renovations, upgrades to paths and seating, landscaping, playground renovations, and a repurposing of one of two in-line hockey rinks. A rebuild of the facility’s skate park area and new pump track will be part of a separate contract. The park’s original amenities include two lighted multi-purpose fields, two in-line hockey rinks, a large pavilion, a basketball court, a playground, and paths.

MHG is excited to be able to support the City of Frederick in this endeavor and to be able to team up with one of AIAPV's members for the architectural design.
