Chevy Chase Renovation

LACArch
Chevy Chase, MD

This 266-square-foot renovation reimagines a dated kitchen and office nook into a light-filled, highly functional hub for family life. Working entirely within the existing footprint, the design focused on improving flow and organization. Removing a long-disruptive column opened sightlines and circulation, while a new island with extended seating encourages gathering and conversation.

Custom cabinetry integrates storage for utensils, spices, recycling, and lids, reducing clutter and supporting daily use. A dramatic speakeasy-style pantry replaces the former office nook, hidden behind a high-gloss jib door. Inside, oak countertops, brass hardware, and concealed appliances—including a refrigerator drawer and beverage fridge—add richness and surprise.

Tailored to the rhythms of a young family, the renovation balances utility with warmth. Through thoughtful detailing and strategic reconfiguration, it demonstrates how modest interventions can yield lasting architectural impact.

Kitchen Before.
Despite an all-white palette, the original kitchen felt dim and closed off. Poor lighting, minimal natural light, and an obstructive column—paired with an island-mounted hood—disrupted flow and hindered functionality.

Transformed by light and flow.
Removing the central column and enlarging the windows dramatically improved natural light, circulation, and connection. A generous island anchors the layout, while custom cabinetry and Caesarstone countertops offer warmth and functionality in a timeless, modern palette.

Seamless integration meets thoughtful design.
Full-height cabinetry in a rich blue finish conceals a custom coffee and breakfast station, blending everyday utility with clean-lined elegance. When closed, the retractable doors preserve the kitchen’s refined aesthetic, maintaining visual clarity and calm. An integrated bookshelf adds a personal touch, while the adjacent range and custom hood form a striking architectural focal point.

A hidden hub of efficiency revealed.
With its doors open, the pantry-style cabinet unveils a fully equipped workstation featuring roll-out shelves, integrated outlets, and space for a microwave and other small appliances. Retractable doors allow the station to disappear when not in use, enabling a seamless transition between function and visual clarity. This concealed hub enhances daily routines while preserving the kitchen’s refined aesthetic.

Pantry Before.
Once an underutilized work nook, this small desk area adjacent to the kitchen and family room felt dim, cluttered, and disconnected from the flow of the home. Lacking clear purpose or storage, it offered little function and even less charm.

A hidden gem of functionality.
This high-gloss jib door, painted to match the adjacent wall, maintains a clean, understate presence while quietly concealing the pantry beyond. A distinctive pull handle offers just a hint of the hidden retreat within, preserving the kitchen’s streamlined aesthetic.

A bold reveal of unexpected charm.

Thoughtful details in a hidden retreat.
Inside the speak-easy-style pantry, a custom vegetable drawer with a perforated metal front allows for optimal air circulation and produce storage. Rich blue cabinetry and warm wood countertops introduce texture, depth, and natural contrast.

Discreet refrigerated drawers and smart storage solutions support everyday efficiency, while elegant brass hardware adds a refined finishing touch. Once an underutilized nook, this fully equipped space now serves as a stylish and highly personalized extension of the kitchen.
