Bates Architects, Davis Construction, and Common Market's Collaboration for Frederick Rescue Mission's First Annual CANstruction

Frederick Rescue Mission has put on Frederick's first CANstruction event, and Bates Architects was proud to partner with DAVIS Construction and Common Market to design and build "Spires and the Creek," a collage sculpture paying homage to a few of Frederick's landmarks.

The team began with auditing what would be a meaningful and technically challenging design, and that is when we arrived at something that would take into account the classic Frederick skyline: clustered spires, the green mountain-scape of the Catoctin Mountains, and the Carroll Creek Linear Park.

Bates was able to use a mixture of hand drawings, rendering, 3-D modeling software, and hours to design and discussion to arrive as a two spire design with a sweeping backdrop. James G. Davis Construction (DAVIS) was able to help problem solve on how to use leveling materials and brainstorming what we may need on build day. The Common Market Co-Op was crucial in their coordination for their canned goods; the mock up phase gave the team confidence in the build.

The energy of build day was undeniable, all 7 teams were excited to allow their creations to take shape. Many laughs and anxious moments allowed the team members to bond, including Common Market who we had on call in case we had a bust on the required number of cans.

Spires and Creek won two awards, Structural Ingenuity and Best Meal! Congratulations to the other teams' sculptures that were also honored. At the end of the exhibit, July 5th, we will know who was 'People's Choice!'
