National Building Museum Curator Chrysanthe B. Broikos will lead a tour of the Museum's stunning exhibit, Making Room: Housing for a Changing America, which explores cutting-edge housing typologies for America's changing demographics through case studies and the presentation of The Open House—a flexible, 1,000-square-foot home designed for the exhibition by architect Pierluigi Colombo. The Open House features a hyper-efficient layout, movable walls, and multifunctional furniture, allowing the space to meet the needs of a variety of today’s growing but underserved households. 

Check-in at the admissions desk in the Great Hall and pick up your wristband. The tour begins promptly at 4:00 PM and ends at 5:00 PM. "Debrief" after the tour with a no-host happy hour at a nearby watering hole. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn how hyper-efficient layout, movable walls, smart technologies, and multifunctional furniture allow The Open House to meet the needs of a variety of today’s growing but underserved households.
2. Experience how The Open House's design can accommodate morphing households without altering the structure or the layout, within a 1000-square-foot footprint.
3. Explore new housing options that can support aging-in-place with diminished physical or cognitive abilities.
4. Learn about other innovative approaches to housing such as micro-apartments, shared housing, cohousing and others.

The National Building Museum is located directly across the street from the F St exit of the Judiciary Square station on the Metro’s Red Line. The museum is also two blocks from the F St/Capitol One Arena exit of the Gallery Place/ Chinatown station on the Metro’s Yellow/Green/Red Line- take a left on F St upon exiting the Metro (you will walk the length of the arena)
