Session I - The Path to Licensure: How, When, Why
More than just a review of the ARE and AXP, this session will help you understand what you'll gain by becoming a licensed architect and how to incorporate your commitment to licensing into the rest of your life. Michael A. Daly, AIA, the Architectural Licensing Advisor for Maryland, will share tips for study resources and test-taking approaches, while recent test-takers will offer their own pointers for how they prepared and stayed sane during the process. 2 LU

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will understand the education, experience, and examination aspects required to become a licensed architect in the United States.
• Participants will learn the rules and requirements for licensure in Maryland, including traditional and alternative paths to licensure
• Participants will explore strategies for obtaining AXP hours.
• Participants will discuss the differences in the ARE 5.0 from 4.0, compare study resources for ARE 5.0, and discuss study tips and techniques to help remove some of the examination fear.

Session II - Presenting Yourself: Resumes, Portfolios, Interviews and More
Knowing how to present yourself and your work effectively is critical at every career stage, whether you are applying for a job, pitching a new client, submitting award entries, or communicating with potential partners and collaborators. Michael A. Daly, AIA, speaking from his experiences as an employer, and AIA Young Architects Regional Director Wayne Broadfield, AIA, speaking from his experience leaving a long-time position to seek more work-life balance, will lead an interactive discussion about using the right materials and messages to land and keep the job you want.

Session III - Mentoring: Finding and Making the Most of Mentor Relationships
A mentor is a trusted adviser or guide. Anyone can be a mentor and everyone can use at least one mentor, if not more, to help make sense of real-world situations that come up as a career progresses. In this session, AIA Potomac Valley Director Kristina Crenshaw, AIA, will lead architects looking for mentors and architects who are in a position to mentor others through an interactive discussion about the value of mentor relationships, and easy ways to establish and maintain those relationships. The evening will include a social hour to foster conversations between young professionals and potential mentors.

Session IV - Career Mapping: Milestones and Directions
Knowing where you've been, what experiences you've enjoyed and done well at it, and which have not been as enjoyable or successful, can be a powerful tool for mapping your future direction. Join us for a valuable, introspective and fun activity that can help you visualize the path toward your ideal career.
