Simplifying the Design of Fluid-applied Air and Water-Resistive Barriers

Course Description

Managing water in a building envelope is a major challenge for design professionals and contractors. With so many choices and competing technologies, choosing a barrier system for a building can be a challenge. Barrier systems are intended to manage both liquid water and moisture laden air; however, the selection, specification and installation of AWRB systems can be confusing. AWRB is a rapidly evolving building product category with many manufacturers, numerous technologies and several code and regulatory requirements. For design professionals and contractors, it is hard to know what to use. Failure of a building's barrier system can have serious consequences for everyone involved. Choosing a system that is simple to specify, easy to install and has been independently validated to comply with code requirements resolves challenges related to AWRB installation. This program will cover the various barrier systems, important aspects of the building and energy codes and review the characteristics of a high performance barrier system.

2. Identify and distinguish between the different types of barrier systems for buildings
