Live Webinar with Grimm + Parker 

AIAPV has partnered with Grimm + Parker Architects to offer a limited number of seats for live webinars of the firm's Lunch & Learn CEU events on the first Tuesday of each month. AIA credits will be reported by the presenting vendors. Registration through AIAPV is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Registrants will receive the WebEx log in credentials the day before the webinar.

Fenestration & Glazing Considerations for School Safety

Course Description

This course explores design strategies for new schools to make the most effective use of glazing for daylighting, natural surveillance, safety and security. It is much easier (and less costly) to address multiple design objectives with a new facility. With existing facilities, hardening the exterior entrances may be the only action that can be taken. Upgrade priority sequences are provided for glazing and locks.

Although an assessment of the age and condition of our nation’s K – 12 schools has not been conducted since 1995, current estimates indicate that the average school in the United States is over 40 years old. The 2013 State of Our Schools Report (by the Center for Green Schools) concluded that $542 billion would be required over the next 10 years to modernize and bring current schools into good repair. This does not include new construction to accommodate enrollment growth.

1. Incorporate CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) thinking into new school designs.
2. Recognize that fenestration products are a crucial part of the much larger system that keeps our schools safe. 
3. Select the optimal glazing for various locations within the school.
4. Select the types of locks and access control systems that best meet needs and budget.
