Course Description: 

A passion for collecting modern art led Glenstone’s founders to work with the late Charles Gwathmey in the first phase of developing the museum, then with Thomas Phifer and Partners and PWP Landscape Architecture in the most recent phase, to shape a former foxhunting estate in Potomac into a contemplative environment to accommodate the Foundation’s growing collection. The new museum, the Pavilions, designed with architect Thomas Phifer, adds over 50,000 square feet of exhibition space as well as office and support facilities. Additionally, over 300 acres have been landscaped around the property. This tour, led by Glenstone staff, will focus on the story of how an evolving collection has been accommodated by innovative architecture and landscape design to produce an extraordinary experience in which art, architecture and landscape enrich one another.

Learning Objectives:

In this presentation, attendees will:

1. Identify how the architecture and landscape design were integrated to provide a neutral and natural backdrop for the art displayed in the building and around the property.
2. Understand how the interior architecture of the Pavilions is designed to integrate with the landscape and central Water Court as well as allow for a great variety of exhibition space.
3. Understand how the existing museum and the new museum have been integrated into what had been a private, residential estate, and the philosophy behind material selections for the buildings in the complex.
4. Understand how the landscape architecture restoration and modifications, sustainable native plantings and new access parking and water management were implemented to create the Pavilions and the site.
5. Explain how an architect’s role can not only fulfill a client’s program but expand their role and presence in the community and impact the character of the institution.
6. Describe how varying daylighting strategies affect the museum visitors, art and human reactions.
