Post-disaster Safety-Assessment Program (SAP) training provides architects, engineers, and building inspectors with the knowledge to provide rapid assessments of homes and buildings in the aftermath of a disaster.
All building industry professionals are welcome to attend. In addition, certain licensed practitioners will be eligible to perform post-disaster assessments after successfully completing SAP training as certified Building Evaluators:
- Licensed Architects
- Registered civil, structural, or geotechnical engineers
- Certified building inspectors
This full day, in-person, all-hazards, training course will include the SAP Building Evaluator Manual. Attendees will receive two (2) field manuals from the Applied Technology Council (ATC): ATC-45 Safety Evaluation for Buildings after Windstorms and Flood; and ATC-20 Post-earthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings.
AIA SAP instructors share personal experiences from the field and will walk attendees through interactive case studies. Attendees will understand chain of command in declared disasters and safety precautions to deploy into the field. Our instructor for this training will be Greg Beste, AIA.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No.
Where do I park? Parking is available next door in the Caroline Street Garage ($5 for the day). Street parking is limited to 2 hrs. and is strictly enforced.
What is the dress code? Casual.
What are the Learning Objectives? At the end of this training, participants will:
- Recognize the important role architects and associated building professionals play in disaster preparedness, response and recovery
- Accurately conduct a post-disaster rapid building assessment and complete appropriate damage assessment forms
- Deomonstrate understanding of the Applied Technology Council's ATC-45 Safety Evaluation of Buildings after Windstorms and Floods and ATC-20 Post-earthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings damage assessment procedures
- Earn a Cal-OES registration ID card
