Acoustics for Interiors
Course Description
This interior acoustics course is designed to provide baseline understandings of Acoustics in Architecture and its importance in various types of buildings and applications. We will also cover how sound propagates and interacts with surfaces, objects and individuals within these spaces and their material composition.
Our course will review basic mathematical equations and core competencies for determining various acoustical ratings to include:
- Reverberation time
- Sound Transmission Class
- Noise Impact Criteria
We will touch on industry standards and guidelines for multiple application types and discuss why some standards may be different. As we complete the course we will introduce mechanical isolation concepts and move into closing with examples and technical discussion. This course will provide an excellent introduction to Acoustics in Architecture, their properties and concepts.

Ways that designers can manipulate sound in an environment:
- Designing walls and floors to mitigate sound transmission.
- Specifying absorptive finish materials while defining options.
- Understanding spaces and noise levels adjacent to each other.
- The importance of utilizing buffer spaces, such as closets and corridors between noisy spaces.
- Consideration for the use of sound masking or ambient noise masking options along with pros and cons.
