Course Description: 

Matt Fine of Peabody Architects will lead a tour of this house while the walls are still open. SPG member, Justine Kingham, AIA, serving as the owner’s interior architect (who has arranged this tour along with Peabody Architects, the owner and contractor O’Neill Development) notes, “I've never in my life seen joists and wall cavities so crammed full of wiring, tubes, etc.“ This tour offers the chance to see the hidden work behind the drywall that helps a house achieve PASSIVE HOUSE certification.

Topics will include:

• Technologies that allow residence to meet PASSIVE HOUSE certification
• Structure, HVAC, Solar/Electrical and insulation that differentiates this house from typical homes
• What it takes to create a virtually off-the-grid, fully automated house
• Architectural and construction issues that arise when creating something that is beyond code

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course:

• Participants will better understand the wall construction issues that arise with super-insulated construction.
• Participants will be able to discuss the various components of HVAC, electrical/solar and plumbing systems that create PASSIVE HOUSE ratings.
• Participants will be able to describe issues that arise with structures that are built beyond code for off-the-grid living.
• Participants will better understand the process of PASSIVE HOUSE certification.

This tour is limited to 10 participants. As of June 30, there are 5 slots remaining. Bring masks (required), and hand sanitizer, gloves, hardhat and construction shoes for mud if you have them. Physical distancing will be in practice!

You must also print out and sign a liability waiver and bring to the tour with you.
