Course Description:

This course is designed to provide guidance for preparing strong entries for design awards contests. It will focus most on the specifics of the AIA Potomac Valley and AIA Maryland Excellence in Design Awards process, but will provide relevant advice and best practices for other design award contests as well. Panelists will share best practices for preparing design awards submissions, tips for strengthening your entries, common problems with submissions, and the impact of the Framework for Design Excellence. This webinar is ideal for anyone who has thought about submitting for an award but has never done so, has entered without success, or has entered and won but wishes to refine their approach. The session will be moderated by Scott Knudson, AIA former President of AIA Potomac Valley and Principal, Knu Design, LLC.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss best practices that make a compelling design submission.
2. Define specific design competition requirements that are sometimes overlooked.
3. Learn effective ways to organize and present your submission to be effective and compelling.
4. Learn about the perspective of design awards jurors. How do they review entries? What do they find most significant? What detracts from submissions? How can architects improve their submissions?
5. Discuss how AIA Potomac Valley and AIA Maryland utilize the Framework for Design Excellence in their awards process, and how it is being applied in other design awards environments.

Scott Knudson, AIA
Principal, Knu Design, LLC

With over 35 years of broad experience, Scott is the founder of Knu Design where he uses architecture to bring people together in authentic places, focusing on community-building and affordable housing. He is a member of the leadership group of AIA's Practice Management Knowledge Community. Scott chairs AIA Potomac Valley's awards committee and has previously chaired AIA Maryland's awards committee.

Tom Canfield, AIA
City Architect, Department of Planning & Zoning, City of Alexandria

Tom Canfield received an A.B. from Harvard College in Visual & Environmental Studies, and an M.Arch. from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he received the AIA School Medal. In Washington and Boston, Tom worked for a number of firms, including Arthur Cotton Moore/Associates, Perkins & Will, Moshe Safdie and Associates, and Smith McMahon. In partnership with KiAT, iNC of Singapore & Hawaii, and John Tang Associates of Hong Kong, Tom formed a lead design consultancy primarily focused on large hospitality and residential projects in Singapore, Australia/New Zealand, China, the UK and US markets. In 2006, Tom joined the Department of Planning & Zoning in Alexandria, VA., as City Architect. In this role, he has been responsible for input into long-range masterplan and urban design efforts, development feasibility studies, and critical review and approval of large-scale development projects. A licensed Architect in Virginia, The District of Columbia and Maryland, Tom has participated for the last six years in the NAIOP DC/MD Awards of Excellence Judging, and last year on the Montgomery County Design Excellence Awards jury.

Maria Gorodetskaya, AIA NCARB
Principal, Shinberg.Levinas

Maria Gorodetskaya, a Principal at Shinberg.Levinas, holds a B. Arch degree from Cornell University, and has been practicing in DC and NY for over 15 years. Her technical expertise, attention to detail, problem-solving focus, and strong organizational skills position her well to manage projects and teams.  She balances the creativity of design with the pragmatism of management. Maria is committed to realizing the integrity of a project’s design intent from concept to completion. Maria’s results-driven and owner-focused approach brings value to each project and generates trust that lives on long after construction is complete. Maria’s experience includes institutional facilities, public and private schools, faith-based architecture, multi-family residential, and single-family homes. As a Principal, Maria is integral to the development and execution of business development strategy for the firm, as well as firm marketing efforts, outreach, and the company’s design award submissions and content. Maria’s past projects include award-winning and frequently published Congregation Beth Ahabah, Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center, Carlos Rosario Int’l PCS, Mathewson and Woods Residences.

Mark McInturff FAIA
Principal, McInturff Architects

Mark McInturff FAIA founded McInturff Architects in 1986, focusing on modern design for residential, commercial, and small institutional clients. Their work has been frequently published and has received more than 350 design awards, including a 2003 AIA Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture, a 2005 Institute Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design for the firm’s part in the design of Cady’s Alley in Georgetown, and, in 2006, a second Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture for the Woolly Mammoth Theatre. McInturff has served on dozens of design juries at the chapter, state, and national levels. The firm is the subject of three monographs publishe­d by The Images Publishing Group of Australia, In Detail: McInturff Architects (2001), In Residence: McInturff Architects (2007), and In House: McInturff Architects (2013). A fourth book, Home Work: McInturff Architects is scheduled for publication in 2022. McInturff was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2000.



Antonio Rebelo AIA, IIDA
Partner, Director of Design, Grimm + Parker Architects

Antonio is a leader in G+P’s civic, cultural, recreational, commercial, public safety, interiors, residential and educational practices. With 23 years of experience, Antonio is the Director of Design for G+P, winning multiple regional and national AIA design awards. His notable projects include the National AIA ALA award-winner Laurel Library, Wheaton Library + Community Recreation Center, Bowie City Hall + Police Department, George Washington Carver High School, the Workforce Development Center at NOVA, Wheaton High School, The Varsity, The Culinary Arts Center for PGCC, Leonardtown Library, Elkridge Library, The Capital Region Medical Center for UMMS, Capitol Vista, and Havre de Grace Middle/High School. He has a passion for all aspects of design including mentorship of emerging architects and developing a project’s initial vision in a friendly and engaging way, demonstrating a care for scale, proportion, and contextual integration. Antonio is a strong believer that great design can be achieved with a small budget. Antonio has served on the Board of Directors of the AIA Maryland Chapter and is currently on the Board of Directors of the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter, where he served as President in 2018.
