Course Description:
Join AIA/PV and the Capital Area CRAN for a construction tour of a custom home in West Friendship, Maryland, which was designed with a focus on sustainability. The tour will be led by the project architect and by the designer/installer of the geothermal HVAC system, which is also integrated with a solar array as part of the project. Learn about the fundamentals of the geothermal system in particular, and how it was designed to integrate seamlessly with this high-quality home. Understand the many benefits of choosing a geothermal system, including incentives and rebates that could help your clients choose green.

Learning Objectives:
- Tour a suburban residential project construction site with the project architect and the mechanical systems engineer to learn about the fundamentals of geothermal, solar, and radiant flooring systems, and how to integrate them seamlessly into a high-quality house design.
- Understand how variations in Ground Loop Systems impact choices for geothermal system design.
- Learn specifics about how a Geothermal system which is used for heating and cooling a home can also be used to supply domestic hot water as well as to serve a hot water radiant floor system.
- Learn how Geothermal Renewable Energy Tax Credits can help offset initial costs of such systems and how, for homes constructed in Maryland and a few other states which consider geothermal to be a Tier 1 renewable source, the ability of property owners to sell Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) annually on the open market can help offset industrial and other sources of pollution.
- Understand fundamentals of current solar radiant technologies for residential projects.
