Come tour the Potomac Yard Metro Station, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) newest Metro Station within the D.C. Metro region. The tour will be guided by the design team for the project, Leuterio Thomas Architects and Engineers, and will introduce participants to the soon-to-be-completed station, which will be the first open air station in the world certified as LEED for Transit. The Potomac Yard Metro Station will provide a metro stop in a previously unserved section of Alexandria, opening new connections to the rest of the city, providing access for new communities, and building upon Northern Virginia’s ongoing investment in technology and graduate education with the anticipated arrival of Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus and Amazon’s second headquarters.

The Metro Station is situated between the George Washington Parkway and the Potomac Yard neighborhood, in Alexandria, VA.  The Station is on the Metro system’s Blue and Yellow lines, connecting to downtown Washington, D.C. and Regan National Airport to the North, and Old Town Alexandria to the South.  The site was formerly the Potomac railyard, which served as a major hub for cargo rail from the early 1900’s to the 1980’s when the site was shut down.

2. Describe how mass transit infrastructure benefits society, reducing vehicular traffic & emissions, enhancing accessibility, and connecting the Potomac Yard area to the WMATA transportation rail network.
3. Identify key environmental benefits of a comprehensive mass transit system in a city like Washington, DC.
4. Identify LEED for Transit goals as the first project in the world to be designed under this new certification.

Key Information:

Safety – The Potomac Yard Metro Station site is an active construction site and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), consisting of hard hat, high visibility construction vest, safety glasses, and OSHA compliant safety toe footwear, are required. Entry to the site will not be permitted without appropriate PPE. Attendees must supply their own PPE. As an active construction site, participants need to bear in mind that there may be uneven surfaces, approximately .5 to 1 mile of walking and climbing of stairs are required to access the site. Elevator and escalators are not complete and will not be available for use during the tour.

Transportation – The use of Ride-Share, Carpooling or Mass-Transit (bus stop located at Potomac Avenue & East Glebe Rd) is recommended as parking in the area is limited. Parking may be found along Potomac Avenue depending on availability, or at nearby public parking garages. Parking at the Target parking lot is not recommended as they may tow people who are not patrons.
