Course Description

A growing amount of evidence links the condition of our built environment to individual health behaviors, as well as broader public health outcomes. Developed by experts in public health and design—including advisors from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. General Services Administration—Fitwel’s evidence-based, high-impact strategies support health and productivity in any project, through targeted design and operational improvements. We will tour the headquarters of Torti Gallas + Partners, a project that is pursuing Fitwel certification, highlighting the firm's commitment to improving and safeguarding the health and wellbeing of building occupants.

Learning Objectives

1. Familiarize participants with the 7 health impact categories of Fitwel: food, safety, activity, equity, well-being, community, and reduced morbidity/absenteeism.
2. Explain the process by which Fitwel requirements were implemented on an active project and how the various aspects of Fitwel increase productivity and health.
3. Understand practical design and operational strategies that have created a healthy living environment for occupants, through a project’s location, outdoor spaces, ground floor amenities, stairwells, and shared spaces, among other opportunities.
4. Participants will tour a DC-based commercial interior project that is pursuing Fitwel certification to address a range of health priorities.

Parking & Building Entrance
Please try to arrive 5 minutes early. Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood and local lots. TGP's office is located directly across from the U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo station on the Green & Yellow lines.

Guests should enter through the main door at the front of the building and proceed to the 2nd floor. No sign-in is required; TGP staff will be at the front desk to greet and direct participants.
