This is a free event for members of the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter; members of other AIA chapters and nonmembers are welcome to purchase tickets.

Students: Students are welcome to attend some or all portions of this event, but we ask that you register beforehand. Registration is free.

Parking: Attendees may park for free in Lot 1 and JJ after 4:00pm. Do not park in Lot 3 (the space in black on the map). Additional paid parking is available at the Mowat Parking Garage. The Architecture Building is a short walk from all these lots.

CEU PRESENTATION:
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON THE PROFESSION OF ARCHITECTURE (PANEL DISCUSSION)

Course Description:

While technology is taught in educational institutions, the focus is often on a particular tool and not the application of concepts. Institutions that focus on concepts are less common. To effectively use big data, knowledge of statistics is helpful. Likewise, to build scripts for computational design may require some knowledge of computer programming. Should these topics become required for individuals that choose to pursue careers in the AEC industry? Should professional registration address design technology? Are employers willing to hire people that will need to develop these skills on company time? Our panel will debate the future of architectural education and technology.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss potential new requirements for the integration of technology in higher education settings for AEC professionals so students have requisite skills to model carbon offset, energy, solar, etc. implications.

• Recognize the new roles required to fully integrate design technology into project delivery to ensure project planning simulates building conditions (carbon offset, etc.) and plans accordingly.

• Examine the role employers play in design technology skills development and the impact on occupant wellness.

• Debate whether current professional educational and licensure requirements should be amended to include design technology.
