Course Description:

Quinn Evans’ award-winning renovation of this scientific organization’s historic headquarters seamlessly integrates conservation and preservation strategies with sustainable design. Their work renewed the building for the next generation while acknowledging that they are only the latest in the edifice’s long line of past and future stewards.

With an increased focus on large public meetings, the Academy needed to expand the building’s conference facilities. Rather than enlarging the building’s footprint, unused light courts were filled to create new atria that serve as circulation and pre-function spaces for the primary meeting rooms. The transformed building is more engaging and accessible to visitors, in keeping with the Academy’s reorientation toward a more public-facing mission.

A recipient of several awards including the AIA Potomac Valley Honor Award and the Washington Building Congress’ Craftsmanship award, the newly renovated National Academy of Sciences also achieved LEED Gold.

Learning Objectives:

1. Familiarize participants with the inherent sustainable attributes of Historic Preservation & Renovation.

2. Discuss the challenges and opportunities confronted by design teams throughout the design and implementation of historic building renovation.

3. Highlight innovative Architectural gestures showcasing conservation, preservation, and sustainable design.

4. Understand how well executed conservation and preservation strategies in conjunction with thoughtful, and well executed design interventions can positively impact users of existing buildings by participating in a tour of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC.

Visiting the National Academy of Sciences
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is located north of the National Mall, at Constitution Avenue and 21st Street NW (2101 Constitution Ave.). NAS is accessible by Metro's Orange, Silver and Blue lines. Best access options are walking, bus, or Metrorail; Foggy Bottom–GWU is the nearest metro stop, about eight blocks from the academy. If driving, there is a dedicated parking lot at the intersection of 21st and C streets NW.
