Course Description:

Cloud adoption and Covid have drastically changed our work environment. Both accelerated the need for digital transformation and remote work, and they transitioned everyone into electronic document management. Increasingly, work done under supervision of licensed Architects is produced, transmitted, and archived electronically as originals. It is essential that architects learn best practices for protecting the authenticity of their electronic documents, as the use of forged documents can produce unsafe, unhealthy buildings.

In this 60-minute session you will be introduced to the legal requirements for electronic original records and electronic signature of the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act. You will also learn about the key ingredients for legal document reliability and why this is important for electronic records management for licensed architects, the different technologies available on the market, and the varying reliability levels of each. The presentation will also discuss the impact of digital signatures for electronic records authentication on risk mitigation and business productivity, as well as the unsafe consequences of forged documents based on real-life examples. The course will close with a Q&A session that will enable attending architects to clarify how best to update their electronic document management practices.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the key legal ingredients of electronic records reliability.

2. Understand the different forms of electronic signature solutions and technologies available on the market for licensed architects and their varying levels of reliability. This will enable licensed architects to make better informed decisions about the technologies best able to prevent tampering and therefore avoid potential health, safety, and liability risks from the use of tampered documents. Attendees will learn about real world examples of buildings based on tampered documents that collapsed or failed in other ways, resulting in injuries and death.

3. Understand the differences between electronic records management reliability and electronic records key ingredients of reliability. They are two sides to the same coin and both are necessary to prevent tampering and possible compromised safety and health consequences.

4. Understand how to mitigate professional and business risks with records to electronic records reliability. This will help ensure buildings are built safely and meet code requirements for proper ventilation, electrical wiring, etc.
