The Science and Sustainability of Solar Heat and Light Control with Metalized Fabric Shades for Maximum Building Occupant Comfort
This course provides a detailed description of design solutions using new technology, and high-performance fabrics in interior shading. The focus of the course is to provide science-based evidence to assist the specifier in choosing the best solutions for occupant wellness, energy saving, and design. This presentation outlines the technical and aesthetic properties of this specialized technical fabric versus standard fabrics for glare and heat control.
Credits:
1 LU/HSW and 1 IDCEC CEU
Please note: You must attend the entire session to receive continuing education credit.
Learning objectives:
- Identify opportunities to control solar heat gain, thus decreasing the reliance on HVAC systems in a building while promoting occupant well-being.
- Develop design strategies to connect building occupants to the outdoors by maximizing view-through while still effectively controlling heat and glare, optimizing occupant productivity.
- Understand how user discomfort from glare is a product of the total light transmission, which includes both direct and diffused light entering through the window.
- Address building occupant safety through inhalation exposure by detailing interior environmental concerns such as neutral levels of VOCs, antimicrobial properties, and manufacturer material disclosures in fabric shade design solutions.
